In her fourth novel Tar Baby Toni Morrison intertwines the ideas of race, gender, and class while composing a complex narrative of mythology, modernity, and cultural identity. The present essay focusses on the theme of identity in this work, based on the African American experience and cultural tradition. This raises questions about the limits of cultural transfer and literary translations.
