The novel ‘Schweigen über Guernica’ from the austrian writer Christoph Janacs treats Picasso’s painting Guernica as well as the historical bombing of the basque town Gernika during the Spanish Civil War aesthetically in a special way. The text combines different forms of intermedial relationships as e.g. the ekphrastic reference to paintings, the simulation of principles of production and reception which are characteristic for films, the simulation of the act of painting itself as well as offering on a meta-level reflections about the relationship between certain media, the problems of reception etc. As such, ‘Schweigen über Guernica’ can be considered as an aesthetically extraordinary way of production and reflection of memory versions.
